About ISLE 2014

Ever wanted to do your part for communities around you?

Discover new things about yourself and others?

Have an unforgettable experience with new friends?

Then Raffles ISLE is for you! 🙂

What does ISLE aim to do?

Raffles Institution International Service Learning Elective (ISLE) aims to promote a spirit of service learning– not just among its members, but also among people whom we interact with. We believe that service learning is meaningful because it enriches both the lives of those who serve and those being served.

Who are we?

A team of around 70 individuals who are passionate about service learning! ISLE consists of 3 teams: Rainwater, Riverkids, and Laos.  Rainwater and Riverkids do their overseas service learning in Cambodia, while Laos does theirs in, well, Laos.

Rainwater aims to improve rural villagers’ access to clean and safe drinking water, as well as their hygiene situation, through partnering with Rainwater Cambodia, an NGO. Riverkids aims to empower vulnerable children through education. They also work with a partnering NGO, the Riverkids Foundation in Phnom Penh.

You can learn more about the individual ISLE teams by clicking on the links to the right of the page.

What can I look forward to?

Throughout the year, we engage in various activities: team-bonding camps, sharing sessions from others who have engaged in service learning, and group discussions. All ISLE teams also conduct local service learning with Volunteer Work Organisations (VWOs) of their choice.

In July, there is an ISLE Week where the various ISLE teams share their experiences with the school and conduct their fundraising events.

All this preparation leads up to the overseas service learning component: the most anticipated part of ISLE for most members!

How can I join ISLE?

ISLE is one of the enrichment programmes for Year 5 RI students. Details for signing up would be available at the start of the year, so stay tuned! 🙂
